RED SUNSET MAPLE

.

  1. PLANTING HOLE: The top of the hole should be two times the diameter of the root ball, with the sides sloping to the bottom of the hole.
  2. BASE: The base or bottom of the hole should be undisturbed soil to support the root ball and reduce settling.
  3. BURLAP/WIRE BASKETS: Cut and remove burlap or wire basket completely     (do this in the hole after the tree is positioned for planting).  The top of the root ball should be slightly higher than the surrounding grade.
  4. or- REMOVE CONTAINER: Use care and gently remove the root ball from the container by holding the trunk close to the root ball and pulling gently.
SCORE ROOTS: Make shallow cuts ( ½” to 1” deep) down the outer layer of the root ball (approximately five to seven evenly spaced vertical cuts around the root ball) and then slightly loosen the roots around each cut. The top of the root ball should be slightly higher than the finished grade.
  1. BACKFILL: Fill the hole with the original soil, if needed, supplement with tree and shrub planting mix or compost. Be sure to tamp the backfilled soil in firmly.
  1. WATER: Thoroughly water to eliminate air pockets and settling, and to soak the root ball and surrounding soil.
  2. MULCH: Apply 2” to 3” of mulch to the surface to retain moisture and suppress weed growth.  Be sure to keep the mulch 3” away from the trunk.
  3. WATERING: Water deeply by placing a hose at the base of the plant and run it slowly. For average to large trees and shrubs, water approximately 30 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Continue to water into November. If the weather is very rainy, decrease the amount you water.
  4. FERTILIZER: For trees and shrubs 2 years and older, we suggest the use of Espoma Tree-tone or Holly-tone according to directions.
